Advent calendars

It’s easy to say that you are definately, positively and without doubt going to make a stunning homemade advent calendar this year! Especially if you have planned to make one in other years but then December the 1st has just gone and snuck up on you. It’s okay. It happens.

The good news is that there is still time!

If its inspiration you are lacking try doing a search for handmade/homemade advent calendars on flickr. Its amazing the things that people have thought of and created to serve as a countdown to Christmas day.

One of my favourites was a beer advent calendar that a friend pointed out two years ago.

Last Christmas the kids and I made one as a Dec 1st surprise for their Dad who doesn’t always appreciate the whole handmade thing!!  It was an instant hit.

All you need to do is cut the top flaps of a carton for beer and place it on its side.  I printed out the numbers from 1 to 24 and used a circle punch which was about the same size as the bottle cap to cut out each number. The kids stuck the numbers on with sticky tape starting with number one in the top left hand corner.  We used a few cardboard stars and hung a couple of silver charms for extra decoration. Add a bit of green tinsel and you’re done.  A bottle of beer went into the fridge each morning to be consumed at a later date when cold.

If beer isn’t your thing check out this free advent calendar template from this idea packed site

I don’t imagine that we are in any real danger of forgetting Christmas day although we may forget to remember what it must have cost God to send Jesus into this world.

Happy remembering.
